Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have briefly shown the steps of the magazine production in a comic strip I have made. However, they are not shown in full detail so therefore the process isn't shown to full reliability. The first step would be to think of ideas for the magazine; it has to be an idea that would sell to target audience of consumers, which they would then have to do a lot of planning and research for before actually creating the magazine. This would include looking at products that are similar, challenging these and creating ideas on how to make the potential magazine better than the existing ones, such as the features and layout. This means that they are then competing to make their magazine better and persuading people to purchase it.

The next part of creating a magazine would be to do basic flatplans of the magazine and think of issues to go into it so that it is worth the value and price the consumer are willing to pay. However, my flatplans were quite basic and there would be many attempts of flatplans and improvements made before going on to creating the products. The contents must be done as well so there is enough inside; articles, features, posters, photoshoots, bands, interviews, etc. After this is done it would be time to go onto the next step.

The next step would be looking closer into similar competing magazines and the features they use, including the props and poses, as well as models etc. Once all of this is complete, the production of the magazine using technologies and programmes could be used to make the process quick and easy, such as: Photoshop and InDesign. Personally I preferred creating the whole product on InDesign. The design and layout however was changed throughout the whole process.
The magazine would then be fully constructed and ready on a computer screen, but wouldn't be distributed this way. The magazine would need to be posted so that it could get feedback and opinions on the magazine so far, and this would help to improve it. After all this is done then the final product would be ready to print and then they would send it off to a distributor company, most likely a large one so it can be put in popular shops and ready to purchase.A distributor is a company that sends out produced products to smaller companies to sell, and then get a small amount of the profit because they sent them the product.

This is another comic strip in which I did in three different sections to show the distributor part of the process. It explains briefly how the product is given to a large distribution company and then sold off too smaller one's. This is so the consumer can see them and purchase them with the large distribution company getting profit for each product sold, and then giving the rest to the producer of the product.

Due to the fact that the target audience is alternatives, or 'scene kids', 'emos', they are similar to those of Kerrang! which are distributed to mainstream audiences rather than niche. Therefore my magazine is likely to be widely distributed to publishing companies such as Beaur Media Group (who ownKerrang, and Q) and they get a largerr audience. These would then be distributed to places such as HMV, WHSmiths, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and any other similar shops. My product follows similar conventions as kerrang so it would reach to a similar audience and I could apply techniques of Beaur to my product so it gets distributed.

To advertise my product I would do what Kerrang does to advertise and use a corresponding TV channel, radio station, online sites such as social networking sites like facebook and myspace, and use posters. Due to the audience I think the most effective way would be to advertise via facebook so it reaches everyone especially the mainstream audience. The social websites are the easiest and most popular way of communicating and it would therefore help sell my product. I have also put subscription information on the magazine so that they can get the magazine via post or saved in newsagents. Due to web 2.0 and internet technology it is a lot easier to get recognised via advertisement and therefore would be easier to distibute too. Also there would be pages linking to hobbies, and fashion relating to the target audience and this would interest them more.
