Article Draft

When Riot magazine got offered the opportunity to catch up with newest band on the block there was no way that we could turn it down. So there I was sat eagerly waiting for singer Scarlett of the new and exclusive rocking band on the block Access All Areas, to give you the lowdown on what’s to come. I have no idea what to expect but what can I say other than wow she can make an impression. She placed herself next to me as the interview commenced, and I knew it was a interview I wouldn’t forget.

Hi Scarlett, Your’ a lucky girl with a huge talent. Was it hard to get into the industry, but it all happened so quickly.
Quickly, that’s an understatement. Trust me, it was a huge struggle to break into the music industry, I almost gave up on myself. I have been singing for as long as I can recall, or talk for that fact! Before the contract with the guys it was impossible to get local gigs, I could barely afford to keep my way. My family were supported though, I started doing videos on Youtube when I was young to get recognised. i was lucky that the band saw me on youtube and needed a singer. We then put ourselves on Myspace and it’s safe to say that if it wasn’t for the site I would be living in a ditch performing for people who didn’t give a s***.

Who influenced your music?
I wouldn’t say anyone did. I listen to people in the same position but it wouldn’t suit us.

Are you a rock chick? Like Paramore or Taylor Momsen?
I am definately no rock chick, i had a tough upbringing that made it bumpy and who I am. I get f***ed off if anyone compares me to Taylor, I’m pretty sure she’d do the same.

What was the upbringing like?
I was one of those kids who wouldn’t listen and I just didn’t give a shit. I was taught to live for just me, but I’ve changed. I lived with my 3 brothers, 4 sisters and my mum in a small flat because my father was a t*** and left us. I had to help her because it wasn’t a nice area, muggings and fights over little things like hats. So music was my escape, that’s why my lyrics have meanings,

Wow thats rough, did music save you and how did you get recording stuff?
I know it sounds ridiculous but yes, it is my life, just like many others. If it wasn’t for music I would steal and fight to get by, but I got music equipment on Saturdays from a council service and used it for five years, starting when I was seven.

Things were bad for you, there is a rumour about rehab you went to is this true?
Yes, I was so f***ed up at one point and i was in such a bad place where I felt no-one cared or supported me.I miss being a f**ked up freak, I had such big and bad thoughts but it’s about knowing when to move on. I was depressed, but it’s so not cool!

It was fast for your band, first becoming best upcoming band on facebook to making your own album, how do you feel?
We started on facebook two years ago and we message supporters from myspace and from then others started supporting and next thing I knew there were hits and record companies wanting to make our album. Its f**king amazing and is going to be the best year.

How does it feel to get recognised?
It is so wierd for me, growing up somewhere that nobody knew your name and didn’t care if they bumped you. I guess it’s a good change that I have to get used to. i haven’t been phased really, the only thing I’m asked is my sexuality but what can I say?

So you have a secret, tell us more, and about you album?
*giggles* Well they remain secret, don’t they? Well nothing to say besides I write my own songs for us and they are released and available for download soon.

So there’s lots of different material?
Yes, there will be lots of different types and maybe few videos if your lucky. I guess you will have to save money to but it and wait and see.

Well we for one can’t wait! It’s released the 19th June 2011 or visit www.facebook.com/accessallareas

Article Planning and Research

The article will be about a new small town solo artist who becomes part of a big industry and how she is starting to fit into the industry. She had sent a music disc into the magazine in order to get noticed and recognized by other musicians, or possible fans. It's going to give some information about how she was brought up, and what her life was like- some of the experiences she had that made her turn to music. The article will be a review of her new single and how she was discovered in the beginning by using youtube, and other social popular sites. Overall it is basically how she got into music and what her song lyrics are about- whether they have meaning behind them and all about the artist.

My target audience is people between the ages of 16-24. In order to target my audience I will have to use casual language, neither fully formal or informal. There will be some colloquial words used such as 'rocking' etc but I will also use some taboo words / Swearing because in rock alternative interviews they normally use some swear words but not all swearing. In my article it will use some technical language because it is going to be about where and how the artist had first got into recording and producing their music. It may use language also in which may discuss the instruments and technology used, previous gigs or performances that she had taken part in already, who helped her get to where she is- like a manager, and finally how she promoted, or plans on promoting her music.

In a similar published article there would be between 1000-2000 words with 8-10 paragraphs separated equally with headings, or other questions in a different style text or colour. There would be approximately 10 words per line, depending on how many columns and the size of the actually text and columns used.

I could make the article title grab the readers attention by using different style, bold, large texts. It could be use of lyrics from one of the artists song, or the name of the artist. Saying 'exclusive' in a bold text in the left side corner with the title being a combination of colours which is separate to the house style colour slightly. I will try use a play on words in which would link to the article and the artist. In the kicker paragraph I could write vaguely what the article is about using facts about the artist / group and why she become a music artist- what the lyrics she writes are implying, and what her life was like before she finally reached the music industry.

The first paragraph will use a drop-cap and also highlight the first few words in bold so that it grabs the attention. In order to keep the reader reading I will use emphasis on the language I use and I will make it sound new, exciting, and interesting by the way I write. Using words like 'amazing', 'offit', 'banging' etc to show the emphasis of the music. I could use information about the band in which is interesting to keep people tuned in and also say that she got into the industry by sending in her music to the magazine, and people may keep reading because they want to do the same, and be part of the industry and follow in the new artists footsteps.

To make sure that the reader carries on reading I will hint at things that are to come in the article in which will interest them. Like I could say for example, a quote from the artist or something about her maybe joining another solo artist and doing a duet for her next single, maybe from someone in her family. I could keep them reading by adding some interesting facts and by the words I use so that they know that the best is yet to come in the article, which connotes the best is still to come for the artist.

The final paragraph of my article will be trying to get other people involved in doing the same as the artist did. In my final paragraph I want it to sum up what was in the article but also have a huge impact so I want it to say what is expected of this new solo artist, and her future plans in music. It could contain upcoming gigs that she is attended or participating and maybe even a website link to get her new single, and listen to all her music and get in touch with her.

I have decided that I could put down a website or social networking site in which the reader can listen to the artists music, and also download the music she has already made. I will not include gig information on the double page spread but I could say at the end of the article 'grab the next issue to find out dates for gigs 2011' or go to the magazines website. This means there is a possibility they would buy the next issue and also they would go to the website for sure to find out more for free.

Organising Models

These callsheets and model release forms shows the information needed for all the models who are taking part in my magazine to show that I have their permission to use the photography concerning them and also to show the make-up, location, etc.

Recce of Location

I have decided that i will have a combination of locations for the magazine photography. I have decided to use the studio as a main location, but I decided to use some outdoor shots near a construction site/fence/wall, and also a field. I thought I would do this to show some of the environment around them and so its not all plain. I have done hazard and risk assessments for all of the locations so that I know it will be a safe area for the models to be shot in and I have gone to each location to make sure they are appropriate for my magazine. There are some pictures below to show each separate location I am using.

Street/Town

Field

Other Locations
Another location that I have chosen is either a plain street/field/park, because it is easy to get access to and it could look like a area people hang about in. There isn't a specific reason I chose this, it would just make it less plain than other studio shots I may use. I am going to use some shots in the studio because it is easy to use lighting in key, and also it is easy to do shots with props such as musical instruments or amps. I  chose this location because it will make the images seem more professional.

Costume and Prop Practice

This is a close up of the eye make-up I am intending on using on my model, however it is not complete. I have decided to do the makeup like this in order to show the rock genre and also to make the models eyes stand out because if it is in the readers eyeline the eyes say a lot about the artist normally. However, looking at the image I have decided in order to improve this I will use two shades of grey for the eyeshadow just to make it stand out more.

This is a close up of the makeup after I had finished it, the attempt of the make-up was not perfect but it shows the basic idea in which I had adapted from another rock magazine and image off google. Originally the eyeliner was just going to be black, to show the basic sophisticated look. However, I think by adding a dash of colour it shows the unique look that each artist has, and also shows their creativity for both their appearance, and this may rub off in the music industy. I just did a basic look for the first practice but to improve I am going to stick to the original designs I have found on the internet.

This is another image to show the complete eyeliner on one side but I have left the other eye so that the difference is made clear. I have also used this close up to show the lip colour I am planning on using for the final product. However, I am thinking of brightening the lip colour so that it stands out more and makes the model look more of a rock chick, and a 'bad girl' who oozes sex appeal.

This shows overall both eyes with the basic eyeliner on to show how different she looks before and after, in my opinion the eyeliner makes the models eyes stand out more so I intend on using this makeup for the actual magazine. I didn't use my creativity part to draw the rest of the eyeliner coming off the eye but I will do this for my magazine. I think the black eyeliner shows the mystery and there is more than what is seen to that model but once I have done the smokey eye look it will add more to this effect and it would show the new fashion, or look. This may influence people to try new things, and that's one of the main reasons behind the photography and model choice in a magazine because people want to resemble them.

Further Images in which will influence my make-up look

Eyeliner Designs
These are some eyeliner drawings in which I could try drawing off the models eyes to make them stand out and look more of the rock side of the music industry. I think that only the rock side would use makeup that looks like this because they are more daring and full with attitude so it may influence their decision to make something new and take eye make-up to the next level.

Overall Achievable Look
This is an overall look I am looking to achieve because it resembles some rock artists, for example the pretty reckless. I think this look is very rock chick and it is overall a nice look to show mystery and make the models flawless features stand out. I will try this for the final product.

Influence of Hair and Make-up

Influence of Hair and Make-up
These images had both influenced the hair of some of the models I am using because I just generally associated back-combed hair with rock artists, as does most people. I think it is a stereotype of what is expected so I am going to use this. I think that overall the top layer should only be back-combed and I think this means that it is tidy and also it makes the model look more unique in themselves, so people assume like they aren't like any other music act. Also the make-up in both images are similar and this is where I got the basic idea from for my rock magazine because these are people in which enjoy rock music.

Paige with the hairstyle
This is one of my models modelling the style in which I am going to do the hair, I don't think I could have improved the hairstyle because it is exactly how I imagined it would be. I think I will be using Paige as my model for my double page spread perhaps doing this pose, just to show the 'wild side' of the artist and the way in which they had adapted to the industry.

Costume and Props

In my magazine the costume and props are going to be fairly simple because the rock/alternative don't really wear anything thats overly patterned, or unique. The models I am using are going to be wearing the usual fashion trends that are out now with the 'rock' type. I have decided that my models will be wearing the simple style clothing including skinny jeans, hoodies, and vests, or logo tees. I have decided that my female models are all going to be wearing different styled clothing so it shows all the alternative fashion trends in the genre, and shows that you don't have to fit in and can create your own style in order to stand out from the crowd. The two male models I have chosen are going to be wearing similar clothes however, just the ordinary hoody, and jeans. I have chose these types of clothing to show that celebrities, and people in magazines are just like everybody else and chose to live this way for a reason with the way they act and dress. The pictures below show similar clothing of famous rock, alternative musicians avril lavigne and christopher drew ingle, they have influenced my costume decision, and also the hair and makeup in a way.

Avril Lavigne
Christopher Drew Ingle

The model in which is going to be on the front cover of my magazine is going to be influenced by the style of 'the pretty reckless' Taylor Momsen. The look is shorts, with a long top so it oozes sex appeal. I am going to base my main model on her because she is very big in the music industry and it is clearly showing the genre of my magazine. And also with this costume I am going to use a guitar as a prop so it looks as if the model is a professional musician thats hitting it big. I think that because my model is going to resemble a famous rocker then they will be interested in buying the magazine, and also with the top it could be crazy and combined with the makeup and props it would make the audience member want to purchase it and read further into it. This is the sort of image I want my model to resemble as I think it will stand out and attract the readers attention.
Taylor Momsen

The male models however I want to wear clothing such as vests, and skinny jeans. I think that this would show the true style of rock, alternative music because it shows they can dress in anyway they like but change it ever so slightly to make their look unique. For props I was thinking of asking one of the male models to stand on the amplifier in order to show the passion, daring attitude towards the music. The two male models are of very different appearance so one male is going to be wearing just a tee and the other a hoody, but both wearing jeans. However I think I might take a few shots and change the clothing around ever so slightly to show them moving to the next step. Possible costume looks:

Bullet For My Valentine (BFMV)
Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH)

I will make it so that all the models feel comfortable in what they are wearing, and I will also make it suit their make-up and general look. This is so that the people reading will see how comfortable they are and it may be inspirational and more people will might read the magazine for fashion advice, or updates. The clothing is all in fashion with the 'rock, alternative' genre as well as other original people and even those not up to date on fashion, it shows that its an alternative all around look and this is why I have chosen to portray the models wearing these clothes. I have even decided on relevant jewellery as well that would go with the clothing in order to make it look professional and fully suited to those reading. However, I wouldn't make the clothing overly bold because this would take attention away from the main features of the magazine, but I would make it bold enough to be seen as important.

I was planning on doing some tattoo designs on a few of my models in order to show the rock part of the magazine, and so that they look edgy and tough. I was planning on doing tattoos inspired by both 'Kat Von D' or 'Oli Sykes' depending on the gender of the model. The make-up however won't be overly heavy on most of my models to show that they don't have to look tough to fit in and they are showing they are just like anyone else. A few of the female models will be wearing dark eyeliner, and eyeshadow in order to show the alternative look and I have used a few images in order to show the look I am going to be using on a few of my models.

Font Research

I was thinking of using either of these texts for the Masthead because they're bold and would stand out off the page. I think that the text would connotate that the magazine is bold and gives a good image and would therefore persuade people to purchase the magazine. I think it would signify the genre of the magazine as well because it is edgy and so is the rock, alternative industry. The genre in which I chose appears to have attitude of being loud and if I used this as my masthead then it would show the reality of it all and it would catch peoples eyes. This is 'Devil Breeze Bold' or 'Slant' and they're well suited for the front cover of a rock magazine in my opinion.

I was thinking of using this text on the contents page because I think it would go well with the genre of magazine mainly because it has razored bits out of the text and it is showing edge and attitude. I think it would go well on the contents page for main titles, or category titles because it would stand off the page in comparison to the rest, therefore showing the importance of the text. This is the 'Karabine' text and I think it would be well suited to my magazine genre and audience.
I was intending on using this as other main titles in which are on the front page such as the main sell lines, banners, and maybe skyline/puffs. I think it is well suited to a rock magazine because it is bold and shows the articles will also have a bold point and what you see is what you get. This is the 'Beckasin text' and I think it is well suited to front cover text.

I was thinking of using this text for the different articles on the contents page, and perhaps as text on banners etc. I chose this because it is clear and looks edgy so it would be well suited to the music genre in which I had chose. This is the 'WIREDsaji' text and I think it is well suited for either a contents page, double page spread, or a front page.

Magazine Name & Logo Choice Decisions.

I have decided that the name of my magazine will be RIOT!!. I had chosen to call it RIOT!! because it has emphasis on it due to the exclamation marks and the word 'riot' is often associated with a wild gathering, and maybe violence. I thought this would have been appropriate because at rock concerts there are 'mosh pits' in which can be known as a riot. I thought it was perfect for the genre because it would catch the eye of the reader and it would be clear what genre it is based on because it wouldn't be pop music, etc. The logo however I have decided will be the same as the masthead using either Devil Breeze or Slant, but I am not fully sure which I will be using yet. I have put images below to show what the logo may look like.

I have chosen to leave the logo in black depending on where it will be but however, when it is the masthead it would be white to stand off the dark background. I have decided to use the bottom one because I had asked a groups opinion (male and female) and the majority of them had said that this one would be better suited to the magazine genre I had chosen so I have stuck with this decision. They had said that the bottom one (slant) had more style, and shape to it which I must agree with so I am planning on using this for both my logo if needed and my masthead.

Pitch Reflection

I have grouped these four pieces of feedback together because each of them are asking about the models in which I am going to use for my magazine. The main question asked is what poses I was going to use and the shots I will use. In response to the poses I have chosen a few possible poses I can use for the different pages. I have already got 4 models in which I can use, but I think I will need to find some more male models as well.

For the front page it will be a female model leaning relaxed against a wall, or fence playing a guitar. If I use the female playing guitar the make-up was going to be simple, She was going to be quite natural but with Dark eyeshadow to resemble 'Pretty Reckless' what I looked at in my photography research. With the hair part of the look she will have dark hair, wearing either a hood up or a beani hat.

For the contents page I am using 3 or 4 images over-lined with a range of models, they will mainly have neutral makeup. The poses would be a group shot together in a triangular shape with one at the front, all pulling a slightly different facial expression. The other images will contain a female model pushing up back combed hair, one with a winter hat, and the other undecided.

For the double page spread I was going to use the same model as the front page with back up models in the background so it looks like they are performing. The lighting will be dark and they will be wearing either skinny jeans or revealing clothing.

The poses in which I will use are shown in the practice photo shoot (:

In response to the feedback on the name of the magazine I have narrowed it down to the following:
Exposed, Rocketeer, Riiiot!!!

The final choice I had made is Riot for the name of my magazine , but I'm still unsure on whether it should be in devil breeze bold font, or slant font.

These two pieces of feedback are asking what will make my magazine unique, and how I will make it independent. In response to these my magazine will be unique by the articles and photography choices in which it contains. I will try and make it unique by using articles in which will attract people, and the choice of language, etc will make it unique as well. It won't be exactly like another magazine but I will use kerrang! as a influence, yet make it more independent by the models used.

The rest of the feedback are compliments besides asking what props will be used, and what the articles will be on. I have decided that possible props may include:
Instruments/Guitars etc.
Amps- To lean, or stand on in a photograph.
Microphone stand to make it look professional.

In response to what the articles would be on I have decided only a few ideas, such as:
The charts.
Bands, etc.
News.
Real life stories.
Etc.
